Toy Talk on 702: The Game of Life by Hasbro
The Game of Life board game elicits amazing conversation with kids
Now here’s a family board game that takes 45 – 60 minutes to play, with very clear and simple instructions. Players move through different life stages making choices and decisions and earning and losing money en route. The objective is to be the richest player by the time you retire because you made good choices. Along the way:
– Choose college
– Choose a career
– Buy and sell houses
– Get married
– Have babies
– Go to night school
– Take risks
– Build a career
– Take out a bank loan
Probably the biggest aha of the game for children aged 8 – teens is that they realise that babies and children cost money. Once our test panel realised this, they started to ask questions that made us cry with laughter:
– Can we get rid of our children?
– Can we sell our children?
– Can we put them out to work?
– Can we throw them out of the car?
– Can we leave them on the side of the road?
– Can we kill them? (this comment after a young player had two consecutive sets of twins!)
The important thing about The Game of Life is that it leads to important conversations parents need to be having with their children about the pros and cons of going to college and getting an education before building a career, or building up a nest egg before getting married and having children, investing money and not just spending and earning it etc.
The Game of Life is over 60 years old and is a classic board game well worth having in your games cupboard.
