This Nike commercial, “It’s only crazy until you do it,” captures the conversation about gender bias — a very powerful way to acknowledge Women’s Day on 9 August.
A real, everyday example of gender bias in action
A lawyer-friend of mine was recently quoted in the Sunday Times verbatim about a case she was working on. She said the article made her sound like such a cold-hearted b*tch to which I said, “If your husband, who is also an attorney, had been quoted identically to you, how would he have been perceived?”
The answer we came up with shocked her, “Incisive, top of his game, experienced, confident, etc”. Through this conversation she discovered that she was biased against herself by default, because she is a woman, and due to generations of conditioning.
Women have been called many things as they rise, succeed and challenge the status quo:
- Dramatic
- Delusional
- Unhinged
- Hysterical
- Irrational
- B*tch
- Crazy

Happy Women’s Day on 9 August
Let’s honour those women (and men) who went before us to fight for our equal rights. Let’s make them proud of how we continue to honour their legacy by maximising the opportunities we have today and finding other ways to elevate more women around us.
Come on girls, let’s show them what crazy can do! And, as you are doing it, remember that you have two hands – one for pulling yourself up and the other for helping another person up too.
Have an empowered week.
