Do you believe success is luck, or is it when preparedness and opportunity meet?
The Floating Surfer is the picture of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games so far. Captured by Agence France Presse photographer, Jérôme Brouillet, the surreal image captures Brazilian surfer, Gabriel Medina, in perfect flow, an airborne celebration of his 9.9 score.
I have always believed that success is where preparedness and opportunity meet. In other words, we create our own luck! We always have a hand in it. Even if we, like Medina, pass the praise for success on to G_d, the human collaboration is still there with the effort, the work and the laser sharp focus of our time and attention that we put into something.
This concept applies to both the surfer and the photographer in this case. Both are expert at their craft, have well practised skills, and were prepared when the opportunity came (right place, right wave, right time). The surfer’s score and the photographer’s image are testament to this.
A picture of Medina appearing to settle on a cloud, pointing to the sky with biblical serenity, with his movements mirrored perfectly by his surfboard, definitely says a thousand words about success.
Three questions to think about
- What skills and knowledge do you need to acquire to remain relevant?
- What do you need to practise and get really good at to be ready for opportunity when it comes?
- How are you opening yourself up to new opportunities (hint: networking and connecting with people is a good start!)
Do you believe success is luck, or is it when preparedness and opportunity meet?
Have an empowered week.
